CHRISTMAS TURKEY

Each culture around the world may have a different tradition for their Christmas fest, but one of the most popular ones is, without doubt: turkey.

I did a little research about facts and history of why we eat this. Found some really interesting things:

  • More than 240 million turkeys were raised worldwide last year, with 200 million of those turkeys consumed only in the United States.
  • Turkey is the 4th protein choice for consumers behind chicken, beef and pork. It is low in fat and high in protein.
  • Most domestic turkeys are so heavy they are unable to fly, and have 5000 to 6000 feathers.
  • After the female turkey mates, she prepares a nest under a bush in the woods and lays her tan and speckled brown eggs.  She incubates as many as 18 eggs at a time. It takes about a month for the chicks to hatch.
  • The turkey is believed to have been sacred in ancient Mexican cultures. The Mayans, Aztecs and Toltecs referred to the turkey as the ‘Great Xolotl’, viewing them as ‘jewelled birds’.
  • Wild turkeys are covered with dark feathers that help them blend in with their woodland homes.  The bare skin on the throat and head of a turkey can change color from flat gray to striking shades of red, white, and blue when the bird becomes distressed or excited.
  • The turkey’s popularity comes from the American people’s love of eating the bird for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • Turkeys are intelligent and sensitive animals that are highly social. They create lasting social bonds with each other and are very affectionate; rather similar to dogs.
